Please see the latest photos below of the progress of the Percent For Art sculpture! It's really starting to take shape! Can't wait to see the finished article.
Per Cent for Art is a public art programme where a percentage of the budget for public construction projects is allocated for art installations. It helps bring art into public spaces and enhances the overall environment. It's a great way to make art accessible to everyone! St. Peter's N.S were allocated a Per Cent for Art grant by the Department of Education under management of LMETB. The school underwent a two stage Open Competition process, as recommended by curator Rina Whyte and in accordance with the National Per Cent for Art Guidelines. The selection process was made by the Public Art Working Group and two Professional Artists and chaired by the curator. Fidelma Massey was the highest scoring artist for her proposal 'The Earth Folk Come to School' which are a collection of miniature bespoke and site specific bronze sculptures and drawings.
We love how the sculptures will represent the full school day from arriving at school to the lunch break. There will be characters reading books upside down and having fun in the library, beautifully conveying a message close to our hearts; we all learn differently. We feel this project has beauty, longevity and the ability to capture the imagination of both children and adults alike.
Below are some pictures of the progress so far. More pictures have just been uploaded (February 2024). The sculptures are really taking shape now. We can't wait to see the final result!
