We have been busy!

Stay connected with all the fun activities of our Junior and Senior Infant classes below.

January 2023

The New Year brought many new learning opportunities in Junior and Senior Infants. We have been learning all about the Supermarket in Aistear. We played in the Supermarket Role Play and learned about the names of different foods in games of Bingo. We wrote various different shopping lists and some of us even invented crazy recipes from our shopping lists!

We also completed lots of different art activities, like painting self portraits and making Chinese Lanterns, penguins and rainbows. We have also been really enjoying Music in school, with Music Generation on Wednesdays. We have also been learning a new song called The Green Machine. In PE we are practicing our skipping and we hope to ‘Climb to Great Heights’ with our skipping as we progress towards our Active School Flag goals.

December 2022

December has been a busy but exciting month in Junior and Senior infants with lots of celebrations, learning and fun! We spent lots of time this month preparing for the Carol Service and Nativity Play. We spent many mornings practicing our lines, trying on costumes for our dress rehearsals and learning to sing the Christmas Carols ‘Come and Join the Celebration’, ‘Let me Tell you About a Baby’, ‘Away in a Manger’, ‘In the Bleak Mid Winter’ and ‘Oh Come all Ye Faithful’! All of the hard work and practice paid off when we put on a fabulous show for all our parents, families and friends at the Christmas Carol Service.

In Aistear, we have been learning all about Celebrations and the Festive Season, by playing in the Elves Workshop. In Art, we have been using lots of different fabric and fibers to make Winter Gloves, snowflakes and santa’s!

In our classroom we had some celebrations ourselves- we had a whole school pizza party to thank all of the children for their help and patience with moving classrooms this term. We also celebrated Christmas by having movie time and baking Reindeer Rice Crispy buns on the last day of term before the school break.

November 2022

We have had lots of fun in Junior and Senior Infants this November. As soon as we came back from our Halloween break, we were delighted to see that our cocoons had turned into 25 butterflies! We really enjoyed watching the butterflies' life cycle in real life in our classroom and loved watching our caterpillars turn into cocoons and then butterflies. We released all 25 butterflies into our school garden and watched them fly away.
This month, we have also been learning lots about Transport and Travel! During Aistear, we enjoyed exploring the Travel Agents in the Role Play corner, playing with our train sets, using lego, making our own passports and playing BINGO! In Art, we also got to make Hot Air Balloons and Airplanes which we showed in Assembly, check out the pictures in the Assembly Tab!

October 2022

October has been an exciting month in Junior and Senior Infants.

In Aistear, we started of with the theme of The School and really enjoyed our Role Play area of the school, where roles were reversed and the children were the teachers, principals, office staff and SNA's. Towards the end of the month, our Aistear theme was Halloween and we had lots of fun in our Witches and Wizards Potion lab!!

This month we were also delighted to welcome 33 caterpillars to our classroom. We have enjoyed watching them build their cocoons. We are waiting patiently for them to turn into butterflies, and hopefully after mid term we can release them into our school garden! We also enjoyed learning about hedgehogs and hibernation and even made our own hedgehogs in Art!

This month we also enjoyed having a mindfulness workshop with Úna Curran, a visit from Reptile Haven, continuing with our Music Generation classes, celebrating Maths Week and the Halloween Spooky Walk and Parade.

 September 2022

Welcome back to school everyone! We were delighted to welcome eight new Junior Infants to our class this year. We have had great fun this month getting to know one another and exploring the theme of ‘Myself!’

In Aistear, we were playing in the Doctor’s Surgery. We loved dressing up as Doctor’s, Nurses and Patients in our Role Play area. We made Doctor’s equipment, such as stethoscopes and bandages using playdough. We built a Hospital for our sick teddy Ginger using Lego. We wrote Get Well Soon cards for all of the sick patients in our Doctor’s Surgery. We even learned about some of the bones in our body and made skeletons in Junk Art!

In Maths, we have been learning lots about Sorting in Matching. We really enjoyed doing different activities in our Maths Stations, such as sorting Pom Poms with tweezers, matching socks into pairs and matching pegs. We also loved using the iPads to play the fruit sorting game!

School Tour 2022!

On Friday the whole school went on our tour to Tayto park. We had a tour of the zoo first and then we went on some of the rides! It was so much fun we wish we could have stayed all day long. There were some very happy but tired faces at home time!

Last week our class took part in a Drum workshop that took place in the school. We were able to make sounds with a variety of different drums with vibrant colours. We made tapping rhythms and learned about tempo and the different beats of music and we composed our own rhythms using the different drums. Great fun was had by all!

Ball Jar Treat!!!

We finally filled our ball jar last week and there were lots of different ideas about what we would have as a treat. A Teddy Bear's picnic proved most popular but we had to postpone as the weather wasn't nice enough so we are going to have it next month so our next choice was to have a movie day! Our classroom was turned into a cinema with a cinema treat shop, designated seats and tickets. We had so much fun!

S.E.S.E

We have been making the most of the nice weather and doing some of our work outside in the sunshine. We went on a nature walk and explored all the signs of Spring we could see in our school garden and surrounding area and recorded what we saw through pictures.

Gaelic Football

We are very lucky to have Theresa in again from the Meath Sports Partnership. She will be here for 6 weeks teaching Gaelic football to all the classes and she is a firm favourite with the kids!

Aistear - April

We had student teacher Miss Crowe in with our class for three weeks and she did lots of wonderful things with us for Aistear. Our role play was the Science lab. We got to explore and study various different mini beasts using magnifying glasses. In our Lego corner we worked in pairs to build bug hotels. In our Art station we made bees and in our writing stations we made fact files on different mini beasts.

March Fun!

Road Safety Awareness
A member of RSA came into our class to give us a talk about ways in which we can keep safe when we are on the road. It was very interesting and it was great to be reminded of the dangers on our roads and what we can do to avoid them.

Science Fun!

Our topic for Science was all about sound. We listened to sounds in and outside the classroom. We distinguished between high and low sounds and loud and soft sounds. As part of our Green schools initiative to reduce the amount of waste we use, we decided to use recycled bottles to make maracas. We used rice, salt, dried peas and pasta for each maraca and then tested to see which instrument made the loudest/softest sound. The pasta made the loudest sound and the salt made the softest sound

We were doing some spray art and matching with our I-pads  and we were directing our BEEBOTS to the stars while also improving our counting to 20.

Winter Nature Walk

Junior, Senior and First class went on a lovely Winter Walk around the school grounds. We had a checklist of all the Winter things we wanted to see. Our list included frost, icy leaves and snow drops. We were very excited to spot the snow drops but we weren't so lucky in finding icicles as it wasn't cold enough but we were very happy with what we did see. It was nice to be out in the cold crisp air and wrapped up in our winter woollies!

It was a yummy treat and we had a lovely day! Well done everyone!

Junior, Senior and 1st Class have been covering the topic of dance in P.E for the month of November. This week we were working in pairs to perform a mirror dance where one child made up 5 dance moves to music and the partner had to mirror the moves. We performed these dances in front of the rest of the class and we did 2 stars and a wish peer assessment. This involved the children saying 2 things they liked about the dance and something they would like to add or change to improve the dance. The pupils responded to this really well and all the children were so chuffed with the positive comments about their dancing.
